Are you searching for a new adventure?  Since Spring has officially begun, now is the perfect time to get outside and explore more of what our beautiful state has to offer.  On this episode of Naturally NWA, my four-legged buddy Porkchop and I are taking you to the gorgeous Yellow Rock Trail in West Fork’s Devil’s Den State Park.  From forest trails and rock formations to expansive views overlooking Lee Creek Valley, you’ll soon understand why Yellow Rock Trail is a favorite among Arkansas hikers.

Located in West Fork, this 3-mile trail winds through several bluffs throughout Devil’s Den, designated as a state park site in the 1930s.  You’ll see evidence of buildings from that era constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, from cabins to stone-made shelters for visitors to rest along the way.  Depending on your fitness level and speed (and how many trees your dog stops to sniff at), the hike takes around 35-40 minutes to complete, is moderate in intensity, and will ultimately result in a climb of about 300 feet in elevation.  Any effort you exert will be worth it for the spectacular views!

Your journey on the Yellow Rock Trail starts out opposite a small parking lot, and dogs are welcome to hike with you as long as they’re leashed.  You’ll pass several large rock formations before you enter the forest; take time to listen to the rustling of leaves and the stillness of the natural wonders surrounding you.  Junctions along the path lead you to points of interest along the way, including the CCC Overlook pavilion, the first structure built in the park.  Here you can stop, take a rest, and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings of Devil’s Den.

One of the main attractions on Yellow Rock Trail is, of course, Yellow Rock itself.  This bluff gives you panoramic views of the Ozark Mountains and Lee Creek, with the best views during leaf-off when the trees don’t completely obstruct the details.  This is the perfect spot to soak in the Arkansas beauty of the valley and relax before heading back down the path.  As a loop hike, it’s easy to navigate back the way you came and pick out new details you may have missed on the way up.  Keep an eye out for the streams, rock formations, and stone pathways that make this trail so enjoyable.

The Yellow Rock Trail is an adventure you won’t soon forget, a hike you can go on again and again without ever getting bored of the beautiful scenery.  What are your favorite hikes in Arkansas?  Drop me a note in the comments and let me know, and Porkchop and I just might head there for our next adventurous episode of Naturally NWA!
