You’ve likely seen the TV shows highlighting people moving from their homes to secluded places far from neighbors and in many cases, conveniences such as plumbing and electricity. It’s called “off the grid living.” When moving off the grid, home owners must rely on alternative power sources, such as solar panels.

That Off Grid GuyI recently met with That Off Grid Guy owner Kirk Wolf. He’s also known for his DIY network show called “Building Off the Grid.” After realizing there was a solar need, he changed careers and has been installing solar for the past three years.

Business

That Off Grid Guy specializes in off grid solar. Kirk and his company aims to educate home and business owners on the financial and environmental benefits of solar energy and off grid living. They offer customers long-term energy saving options that minimize costs while facilitating sustainability by supporting our ecosystem.

Solar Stats

My clients are often intrigued by solar power. I asked Kirk the cost of installing solar. He informed me that the starting cost is generally around $3,000 and can cost more or less depending on the needs and wants of the customer. I also asked Kirk, “When can the customer expect to experience a return on their investment?” He confidently answered, “Immediately.” Another question I asked Kirk was “What if there is no sun.” He answered, “As long as you can visibly see fifty feet, the panels are taking photons and charging the battery.”

The Difference

There are two different types of solar. There is grid-tied solar and non-grid or off-grid solar. If the power to grid-tied solar shuts down, so do the solar panels and you have no power. Kirk’s system is non-grid or off-grid solar. It uses a battery back up system. The solar panels charge the batteries. The power used in your home then runs off the batteries.

If you’re looking to reduce your utility bills or use an environmentally friendly way to power your home, check out That Off Grid Guy and tell Kirk I sent you.
